In response to this post over at Fed Up With Lunch ...
Lettuce, half a bell pepper, half a carton of sliced mushrooms, a cucumber, raspberries, cherries, green onions, and half a watermelon. On the shelf above: strawberries, fresh homemade salsa, and Swiss chard from my garden.
And why is it so much fun to peek into other people's fridge's? I think "what's in your ... pantry?" should be next. In my experience having a strategically stocked pantry is the secret to good cooking and not giving up and going out all the time or eating lots of processed crap.
That salsa looks so damn good. I want to come over to your house and eat it all with some really salty chips and a margarita. Who makes their own salsa anymore, you freak? 8-)

Radically cool people, that's who. Ya know what else? Some people make their own refried beans from scratch too. At this very moment I have a crockpot fulla beans with onions, garlic, and dried peppers simmering in my kitchen just waiting for the taco night that will commence this evening. I have to admit I was feeling really lazy last night and I had to force myself to make the salsa, but it's so gonna pay off tonight.
ReplyDeleteAnd next time it's taco night I'm gonna try these blueberry margaritas if I can remember to get all the ingredients ahead of time.
Ohmygod! Blueberry margaritas! I'm feeling faint.
ReplyDeleteThose raspberries look yummy too. We've been getting really sweet raspberries this year that don't melt into soggy lumps before you get them home.
I couldn't agree more on the pantry point. I always have the makings for vegetarian chili and cornbread in my pantry. If all else fails make chili. It's good for the soul.
ReplyDeletehobomama,
ReplyDeleteI also keep lentils in the pantry at all times, because I'll make dahl with flatbread for dinner in an emergency. It only take about 40 minutes, is super good for you, and makes great lunch leftovers. And the curry makes the house smell yummy for days.
And are you letting the girls make their own tortillas tonight?
ReplyDeleteJ
J,
ReplyDeleteAlas, we're using store-bought tortillas tonight. Homemade salsa and refried beans is enough for one weeknight. They loved it last time we did that though, and the tortillas were yummy.
This comment thread is making me hungry.
ReplyDeleteI want that salsa! Thanks for participating!
ReplyDeleteIt was yummy! I forgot to get cilantro, though. But the jalapenos were just spicy enough to make it good but not too spicy for the kids. Yum!
ReplyDeleteMy kids learned in health class that you should try to "eat the rainbow" everyday, so we've been making an effort to include one fruit or veggie of each color in our shopping cart. It sure does make my crisper bright and colorful!
ReplyDeleteThis is fun. I ran across it a few days ago: How to use up your misfit vegetables.
ReplyDeleteA few weeks ago we vacationed at my cousins house, and she made passionfruit margaritas that were to die for. I imagine those would go pretty well with taco night too!
ReplyDeleteI know this sounds crazy, but there's a bar in Portland that makes incredible peach margaritas. I think it's just fresh peaches, lime juice, tequila, triple sec, and ice all thrown into the blender.
ReplyDeleteThat's how I make mango margaritas, which are my absolute favorite. Dice up a couple mangos and add them to the blender with the juice of about 3 limes, tequila, triple sec, and ice. Best. Summer drink. Ever.
ReplyDelete"And why is it so much fun to peek into other people's fridge's?"
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a funny question. It's just human nature to be curious about other people;s lives, I think. And what's inside someone's fridge tells you a lot about their lifestyle.
Oh, I haven't had Swiss chard in years. I wonder if I could grow some in my flower beds?
ReplyDeleteI bet you could. My grandma used to grow sweet corn scattered throughout her flower beds, and it looked really cool.
ReplyDeleteThere's a really great companion planting book that tells you which flowers and veggies do well planted together. I always thought that would be fun too, but have never tried it.
ReplyDeleteYep, it's called Roses Love Garlic. My sister has it. I've read other books by this author, and she's great.
ReplyDelete"And what's inside someone's fridge tells you a lot about their lifestyle."
ReplyDeleteSo true!
This is so fun! When my sister and I are both heading home for a visit, we send each other pics of our packed suitcases in a competetition to be the most efficient packer, and because it builds up the excitement of the trip. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have this problem where I want lots of variety in my crisper like you have, but I cringe at all the associated food miles. It's hard to balance the two!
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled on this post. I'm a few months late, but it's still a great post!
