The Valley Swim Club

Take a minute to write or call the Valley Swim Club in Pennsylvania and let them know just how fucked up their policies are. You know, the club that kicked out a group of black kids that were with a summer camp that had paid the club for use of the pool, because management was afraid they would "change the complexion of the club." Seriously.

It's unreal. This is the USA-we are a melting pot of every nationality and still children are not free to be and play as children in a pool because of skin color? Isn't it crazy--these people are at the pool to darken their skin by the sun.

    God Is Watching!

Oh and I took a minute and emailed the club and I posted to twitter!

This whole thing is a huge misunderstanding about the unfortunate choice of the word "complexion". Of course 65 additional kids will change the atmosphere and environment of a pool and this is obviously what Dr. Duesler, a staunch Obama supporter, was referring to.

  3. What does Dr. Duesler's 'staunch support' for Obama have to do with anything? Oh, does he have a black friend as well? because that will totally make his statement ok.

It's a private club so they can restrict their membership.

  5. Posting anonymously seems a bit cowardly in this context.

But I am curious, Anonymous, if you think that can=should? Just because you may be able to get away with something legally, does that mean you should? Does that preclude advocating against such bigoted behavior? Please.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

We're only hearing one side of the story. I think it's entirely possible that the club thought to make some extra money by inviting a day-care center to use their facility without realizing what an unruly screaming mess the average day-care center can be (regardless of its racial makeup).

The club then handed the situation in the worst possible way: it disinvited the groups without providing any sympathy or explanation, leading the day care center to reach the conclusion that the disinvites were racially motivated. The club then continued to dig itself deeper by using words like "complexion" without thinking it through.

Don't get me wrong, I think the club acted horribly and stupidly. But I don't necessarily agree its actions were racially motivated.

I will be glad to call or write them. Don't tell me that they didn't think to ask each camp how many kids would be attending to see if it exceeded their capacity. All such pools have capacity numbers posted. Gimme a break. Oh and they just happended to choose the word complexion meaning they way something would look and not the color of one's skin. They should be ashamed of themselves and they should face civil liberties violations.

i don't think the club did anything wrong. So yeah they kicked out black campers. They probobly kicked out many other latino, asian, and black clubs. It wasn't their skin it was the population.
