DIY Home Birth

I admit I'd probably be too chickenshit to ever try this, and I know this kind of thing tends to send a lot of people into hysterical lectures on safety and allowing your ideals to endanger a baby and how horrible and unnatural and scary and dangerous and inherently medicalized birth is......but........I still love the idea that you could defy all of that and let birth return to something that's natural and painful and exciting and scary and a normal event in the life of a family after all. And I admire the people who are brave enough to drown out the voices that our culture has planted in their heads and do it anyway. That's all.

I loved this too! I screwed up the courage to have a homebirth with my younger child, but that was with a midwife and a doula and my very wise, experienced, calm aunt. And people still freaked out and acted like I had some sort of death wish and had been duped by some crazy-ass conspiracy theory. And we live like 3 minutes from the local hospital. We definitely need more homebirths and more exposure for the statistics that show that homebirth is actually a safer option for anyone not experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. I know the OB lobby has been very successful in suppressing them, but I think a grassroots movement could help in this area.

It's great it turned out for her. I just can't help thinking how many women around the world do this every year, not by choice, but because there aren't enough midwives? Or they can't afford one. So far, since it's an option here, I imagine birthing with a midwife in a hospital someday. I would consider doing it at home.

  3. I had all three of my babies at home, the first midwife assisted, the second husband assisted and the third alone, or as I call it "universe assisted"....These births, particularly the last one, taught me more about myself and about life then I could have learned otherwise in years. It's like wisdom school on fast-forward....Loved your post, plan on checking out more of them right now!
