Too pedestrian for primetime TV, really.dannyboynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6142743576584523533.post-81849097256071462472010-02-14T15:31:35.211-07:002010-02-14T15:31:35.211-07:00I would actually be less bothered by it all if we ...I would actually be less bothered by it all if we did just openly admit that the olympics are worth the human cost, because then at least we would be honest.Raynenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6142743576584523533.post-84601059676400342192010-02-14T09:37:50.473-07:002010-02-14T09:37:50.473-07:00Even a few years ago I wanted to desperately go se...Even a few years ago I wanted to desperately go see the Olympics. However, I was watching the opening ceremony on friday and could not stop thinking of the money that could've been better spent on those who really need it most. I have utmost respect for the athletes who toil most of their lives to make their dreams come true but at the same time the mockery made of the First Nations people made me upset. We only hear of them in our grade school history books and events like this but the plight of the people in modern times is almost never discussed. The parade that the world makes of the Olympics is really interesting. Thank you for this post, it summarizes exactly how I feel.Sivanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6142743576584523533.post-35621891937199738592010-02-13T09:50:35.073-07:002010-02-13T09:50:35.073-07:00I was kind of dismayed by the comments on twitter ...I was kind of dismayed by the comments on twitter too. I don't know that I agree with everything the protesters stand for, but I can appreciate their passion and their willingness to give up their free time to draw our attention to important issues. Does this mean we should abandon the Olympics? No. But we sure could do things differently.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6142743576584523533.post-61032310304512419412010-02-12T19:57:16.801-07:002010-02-12T19:57:16.801-07:00I predict you're gonna get in some trouble for...I predict you're gonna get in some trouble for this one too. Cuz you really just can't pick a fight with the olympics. It's too big and too wonderful in our imaginations. And it's got history and patriotism all mixed up with it - I just don't see this as something people are ever going to be willing to give up, or to diminish in any way. It has to carry the massive pageantry with it, which means it will always have the social and environmental impact it currently has. So bottom line, we do think it's worth the cost. Our actions say that loud and clear.macenoreply@blogger.com
